The Big Big Country

As a life-long citizen and resident of London, England, I have travelled and observed plenty, yet not all there is to experience here. A small country it may be, but travel it well and you will see much to leave you standing in admiration. It never ceases to amaze me, how one can travel a distance of 70 miles and come upon people who speak differently. It's as if you've arrived from a distant land, separated by an invisible sea. A few miles down the road and you're regarded as a visitor from down south. How can it be that a relatively small place can encompass such diversity? What are the historical circumstances that created these subtle defining lines? I guess I could find some answers if I were to delve deeply into the history books, and maybe I will one day. Now the thing is, with this comparably small island as my reference, how can I begin to contemplate the magnitude of the Americas?

From the northerly, majestic peaks and valleys of the Rocky Mountains, to the extensive eastern coastal plains, that huge mass of apposing landscapes makes no apologies for its awe inspiring grandeur. The coastal plains outline a course extending more than two thousand miles from New York's Hudson River, down through Florida and forming the land regions of the Gulf of Mexico. From there, the Mississippi river begins its lengthy course heading north. It is intersected by the Missouri river which takes a westerly detour up towards and along the Canadian Shield into Montana. These combined waterways form the fourth longest river in the world. Then there are the great lakes of the north. The combination of lakes superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario form the world's largest contiguous lake district. What ferocious power of nature sculpted the Grand Canyon? A mighty chasm 1800m deep within the Great basin which is also home to the expansive desert lands of Death Valley and the Salt Lakes.

Having only touched upon America's geographical features my mind wanders on to consider the many trophies of its inhabitant's legacy upon the land. Who thought of Vegas, the land where crazed imaginings are brought to life? Opulent buildings, intentionally over the top with wild quirks such as great "water features" flowing through them. Caesars Palace, streets aglow with a "neon light fantastic" second to none in the world. Disneyland Florida, the Statue of Liberty, San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, these are just a few spectacles drawn from many. Maybe you can tell that I find this place most intriguing and if you were to personally encounter the smallest sample, I'm sure you would feel the same. But don't take my word for it... "Go see it for yourself".

Things to See for Free in Las Vegas

Free drinks. Free shirts. Free buffets. Las Vegas is full of free stuff - you just have to know where to look. It's estimated that Sin City's Casinos spend over 3 million dollars a day giving away free stuff.

Maybe you've had enough craps or blackjack for the day. And maybe you've already spent $175 dollars for a ticket to "O" at the Bellagio. Need some ideas for fun and free things to see or do?

The Bellagio's famous fountains put on shows throughout the day. Each show lasts about 5 minutes, and consists of different music that the fountains dance and jump to in front of the hotel on the strip. During the week they start at 3 p.m. and go off every hour on the hour. On weekends they start at noon and go every half hour.

After the fountains you can walk inside the hotel and check out the famous Conservatory. It's just past the hotel lobby and is a great place for pictures. The Conservatory's display changes often and always consists of some huge props set among gorgeous displays of flowers and plants and jumping fountains.

North on the strip from the Bellagio make sure to stop at Caesar's Palace. Located in the Forum Shops are some gigantic fountains with statues of Zeus and other gods. These statues come to life every hour on the hour and put on a show in which they tell stories while lightning cracks and a storm rolls in.

At the Venetian you can walk around a mall that is designed like the streets and canals of Venice. You can take a gondola ride, though this will set you back about $15 bucks, or you can just walk along the canals and listen to the gondola driver's singing as they navigate the canals. The ceilings are painted like the sky and you'll be amazed by how much it feels like you're walking through Venice on a cool summer evening.

If you want to travel off the strip - head north to downtown Las Vegas and Fremont Street. Here you'll find the Fremont Street Experience - the largest LCD screen in the world. It covers Fremont Street like a giant canopy for quite a few blocks down the street, over Binions and the Golden Nugget and the other downtown casinos. During the day it is great because you're outside walking, but everything is shaded by the canopy. At night, the screen plays a different light show every hour on the hour. Sometimes its more fun to watch the hundreds of people all staring up at the screen than the show itself.

These are a few of the things you can do for free if you're on a budget in Vegas. And don't forget to check all of the little magazines that you can get around the different hotels and casinos - usually they contain coupons to different restaurants or free items you can claim by signing up at different casinos. Pick one up - they're a great resource.

10 Reasons for Gambling

Most discussions about what motivates a person to gamble usually will start by comparing gambling to life. And yes life is a gamble every time you breathe it could be your last. Getting out of bed in the morning can lead to the last thing you ever do, yet we all get out of bed almost every day. But casino gambling gives us an option we don't normally have in life; we can bet on the outcome of things, we get to choose how much to risk and when to risk it.
Gambling is defined by the Dictionary as the following:
To play games of chance for money or some other stake, or to take a risk in order to gain some advantage.

Here are the top 8 answers we received:

Vacation:

Las Vegas in the last 10 years has become a popular place to bring the family. Las Vegas has many attractions for family fun. And in the evening after the kids go to sleep there is also plenty of adult entertainment.

To win and become rich:

Of all the people interviewed these people seemed to be the least crazy. They came to the casino with hopes of getting rich and being able to quit there jobs and live the good life, but they also know that the chances are good they would all have to get up Monday morning and return to work.

Money problems:

it seems there are many people who believe they can fix there money problems with gambling. Most of the people who claimed that money problems were the reason for them gambling lost more money gambling then they originally owed and had they not gambled would not have been so bad off according to them. Of this group none said they had managed to win the money they needed.

A great place to hold a wedding:

Apparently having a wedding at some of the larger casinos is Las Vegas or Atlantic City is becoming popular, apparently the casinos will give you an excellent price on the wedding hall and rooms for your guests, of course they do this with the knowledge that the guests will spend money in the casino so giving a good rate n the wedding is in there best interest

This is how they make a living:

I found that these people and the ones who had money problems were extremely different. These people at least knew how to gamble, most of them had many years experience and some were regular tournament players with at least 1 win under there belts.

For a bachelor party:

The number of people that gave this response makes it very clear that going to a casino for a bachelor party if definitely gaining in popularity.

To get out of the house:

I noticed almost all of the people in his category were all males and were all married for more them 10 years and had kids. They said they like to come to the casino on average about once a month stay for a few hours, play some games and then head home.

To have fun:

These people had the right idea, but I could not believe how low on the list they scored. Having fun should be the number 1 reason to gamble. They only wanted to have some fun take a little trip to the Casino, have some free drinks, play some games and if they win, good and if not that's ok also. These people came down with a certain amount they could lose and not be upset or broke and they stick to it. These people all seemed to be reaching there goal not one of them was complaining about how close they came to hitting big or what if they had just done this or that.
